Here in Hague, we’re all looking forward to curing our cabin fever at the annual Winter Weekend, being held this year February 18-20, with plenty of activities for all ages. It will kick off on Friday evening with the Snow Queen Pageant, starting at 7 pm at the Hague Community Center on Route 8. Come cheer on your favorite queen or princess.
On Saturday, you can fortify yourself for the day’s activities with a hearty breakfast from 7-11 am. It will be held at the Fire Station, located at the intersection of Route 8 and West Hague Road and proceeds will benefit the Hague Volunteer Fire Department. The Fred LaPann Memorial Run will also start from the Fire Station at 9 am. Registration is at 8:45 am.
Next, head over to Rogers Rock campground on Route 9N between Hague and Ticonderoga, where you can try your hand (or should we say feet?) at cross-country skiing or snowshoeing from 10 am – 1 pm and enjoy refreshments to warm yourself up. History buffs will recall that it was near this spot that Captain Robert Rogers used his snowshoes to outwit his pursuers during the French and Indian War. Now let’s see just how fast you are at tracking through the snow!
From 1–5 pm, you can enjoy a variety of activities at Silver Bay YMCA of the Adirondacks, including crafts and kids’ games, sledding, snowshoeing and hiking. Sleds and snowshoes can be borrowed at the front desk. Hot cocoa and coffee will be served at the gym.
After all those outdoor activities, you’ll surely have worked up an appetite. Head back to the Fire Station for the Beste Scholarship Buffet and Awards Ceremony and the silent auction, hosted by the Rotary Club, starting at 6 pm.
The activities continue on Sunday, with snowmobile rides and sledding at the Hague Fish & Game Club on West Hague Road from 10 am – 1 pm. The Polar Bear Plunge will take place at 2 pm at the Trout House Village dock on Route 9N. Those who plan to take the plunge are encouraged to collect pledges in advance, with all proceeds benefitting the Children’s Miracle Network.
If the mere thought of jumping into the lake in February sends cold shivers down your spine, then the chili bake-off is just the thing for you. We hear that some of the entries might be pretty fiery, which is probably why it’s being held at the Fire Station. The fun starts at 3 pm, with chili, hot dogs, salads, beverages, music – and lots of spirited debate about which chili is worthy of the prize money. Sample them all and vote for your favorite.
Don’t miss this chance to get out and enjoy the fresh air and activities in the spectacular setting of Hague, on the shores of Lake George and surrounded by the breathtaking Adirondack mountains. Bring your friends and family, or come on over and make some new friends as Hague heats up for what promises to be a rollicking weekend of winter fun.
For more information about the events, contact the Hague Chamber of Commerce at 543-6441. To enter your chili in the bake-off, you must register in advance by calling Katy Wells at 543-3006 or Carolyn Dunn at 543-6934.

August 9, 2010 – The Hague Arts Fair, held for the 39th time this past weekend (August 7-8), was a great place to be. Admittedly, Hague is just a great place to be — whether there’s an Arts Fair going on or not. But any event like this gives you the opportunity to see beautiful handcrafted items, meet new people and maybe even reconnect with some old friends you haven’t seen for a while.I watched in fascination as a woman from Putnam Station spun yarn from the wool of her own sheep. Knit hats, sweaters and mittens were on display in her booth, each bearing the name of the sheep who had ‘donated’ the wool. Imagine my surprise when suddenly she looked up and said, “Are you Ginger Henry? You haven’t changed a bit.” It turns out we had been in Girl Scouts together in Hague back in the late 50s. I decided that a) she needed a new optometrist, b) I must have looked really, really awful in fifth grade or c) living in Hague full-time for the past month agrees with me. I’m going to go with c.
I was also delighted to find a vendor who was able to turn an arrowhead that we had found on our beach this summer into a beautiful and unique necklace by carefully wrapping it in silver wire.
From gorgeous photographs and paintings of Lake George to hand-knit items, pottery, jewelry, wooden vases inlaid with stone, glass items, candles, soap, baskets and much more, there was something for everyone. But most of all, it was a great community atmosphere with really, really nice people — the vendors as well as the shoppers. Many of the artisans have already made plans to return next year.
If you’re an artisan, considering registering as a vendor for next year’s Arts Fair. And if you want to take advantage of the chance to see some great handcrafted items and meet the artisans, be sure to put the Hague Arts Fair on your calendar for next year (August 6-7, 2011).
Did you visit the Arts Fair this year? Send us your comments.

The 39th annual Hague Arts Fair will be held Saturday and Sunday, August 7-8, 2010, at the Hague Community Center on Route 8. Doors open at 10 am both days. The fair will stay open until 4 pm Saturday and 3 pm Sunday.
More than 50 vendors will be on hand — some familiar faces from past years and some who are exhibiting for the first time this year. Jewelry, photography, baby gifts, woodcarvings, baskets, candles, pottery, stained glass, paintings and prints, quilted items, clothing, tote bags, maple syrup and other food items… these are just some of the huge variety of items you’ll find at the fair. Whether you’re looking for a gift for someone else or a treat for yourself, you’re likely to find it at the Hague Arts Fair.
The event just keeps getting better and better. The quality of the crafts as well as the variety of vendors increases with each passing year.
Food and beverages will also be available, including the ever-popular kettle corn. Make your plans to stop by the Hague Community Center either Saturday or Sunday. Spend some time talking to the craftspeople about their work and shopping among the many stands.

So far, this summer has been one of those where you really just want to hang out in or on the lake as much as possible, But if you can tear yourself away from the lake for a few hours, we recommend a visit to the Ticonderoga Street Fest, which will be held Saturday, July 31, from 10 am to 4 pm, along downtown Montcalm Street. From the corner of Lake George Avenue to the corner of Champlain Avenue you’ll find arts and crafts vendors, specialty food kiosks, sidewalk sales and a farmers’ market. You might also want to check out some of the displays — for instance of antique cars, boats and more.
Fort Ticonderoga’s Fife and Drum Corps will kick off the event, marching down Montcalm Street. Other live musical entertainment is planned throughout the day.
Whether you’re planning to do some early holiday shopping or looking for something unique for yourself, you’re likely to find it among the artisans specializing in wood crafts, toys, jewelry, glass, rustic furniture and more.
Penelope the Clown will be on hand, offering face painting and balloon art for the kids. And speaking of kids, they’ll enjoy treats like snow-cones, deep-fried Oreos and more. Oh, yes, and there will also be plenty of tasty food items for the adults as well — in case the deep-fried Oreos don’t exactly fit into your diet plan. And now for our trivia question: Which has more calories: deep-fried Oreos or S’mores? And more importantly, does anyone really care?
Note that Montcalm Street will be closed to traffic from Lake George Avenue to Champlain Avenue from 8 am to 5 pm that day. Rain date is Sunday, August 1.

Hello and welcome to our brand new blog, which we hope you’ll find informative as well as entertaining. We encourage you to post your comments below. If you’ve visited Hague in the past, what did you like best? What are your fondest memories? If you’ve never been here, do you have questions about the town or area? What would you like to read about in future blog postings? We have a lot of ideas, but we also want to hear yours.
To get started, let me tell you a bit about Hague: We are a small town in northeastern New York, located on the shores of beautiful Lake George in the Adirondack Mountains. It would be hard to find a more perfect place to vacation with friends and family. And, for me, it’s the perfect place to live.
We offer a wide variety of attractions and activities year round: marinas with boat rentals, quaint gift shops, two general stores and a variety of accommodations ranging from B&Bs to motels to waterfront resorts. Whatever your tastes are in food, you’re likely to find it at our restaurants, from burgers and steak to seafood and vegetarian dishes and more.
In the warmer seasons, you can enjoy hiking and biking on our trails or set out on a charter fishing adventure. In the winter, we offer snowmobile and cross-country ski trails, some of which are even lit at night. But don’t just take my word for what a special place this is. Come see for yourself, and start creating your own memories.
We hope to see you soon in Hague, where the people are friendly, the lake is idyllic and life is good — all year round!!!
Tom Haskell, President
Hague Chamber of Commerce
