Art in the 'Toon Age

Charles R. Wood Gallery / The Hyde Collection

A springing, resilient line; bright, fat colors; the use of shorthand communication devices; and a generally upbeat mood are often clues that cartoons, comics, animation, or popular ilustration have influenced an artist's work. This is tru of the thirty-two contemporary artists included in the exhibition Art in the "Toon Age drawn from the colections of the Kresge Art Museum. The exhibition will feature forty-three works by such artists as Laylah Ali, Ida Appelbroog, Roy De Forest, Carrol Dunham, Red Grooms, Jeff Koons, Takashi Murakami, Elizabeth Murray, Yoshioma Nara, Jim Nutt, and Sue Williams. The exhibition also includes sixteen historically relevant comics and cartoons from the Michigan State University Library's Nye Collection. Many of these comics and cartoons provided the sources of inspiration for the artists featured in the exhibition. Art in the "Toon Age was organized by the Kresge Art Museum, Michigan State University, East Lansing, MI. The national tour was organized by Landau Traveling Exhibitions of Los Angeles, CA.

Five Decades of Collecting: The Hyde Collection Since 1963

Charles R. Wood Gallery / The Hyde Collection

This exhibition will highlight the diversity and scope of acquisitions made by The Hyde Collection over the past five decades. After the death of Museum founder Charlotte Pruyn Hyde in 1963, the collection has continued to grow primarily through gifts and bequests. As part of her bequest, Mrs. Hyde left just over 1,000 artworks and artifacts, and, today the collection numbers nearly 3,000 objects that reflect a range of medium, subject matter, artistic styles, and periods. The exhibition will trace the development of the permanent collection over the course of five decades by highlighting the major acquisitions and the new direction of the collection in the 21st century. Approximately fifty objects will be on view including paintings and sculpture, drawings and prints, furniture and textiles, metal ware and ceramics. Five Decades of Collecting is organized by The Hyde Collection and curated by Erin B. Coe.
