The BESTE SCHOLARSHIP FUND began in the 1960s with a bequest from Mary C. Beste, a long time Hague summer resident. Ms. Beste designated the money for Hague students graduating from high school and going on to further their education.
Several students received monetary awards before the original Fund became depleted in the early 1980’s. In 1985, the Hague Winter Carnival Committee assumed administration of the Fund through a steering committee chaired by the Town Supervisor. The steering committee includes representatives from the Hague Winter Carnival Committee, the Hague Historical Society, the American Legion and a representative from the Ticonderoga High School Guidance Office. They drew up new guidelines to establish eligibility criteria for students, promote fundraising programs and administer the Scholarship program.
Any Hague student graduating from high school and pursuing further education (including vocational) is eligible for an award. Students must complete one school semester and enroll for a second to receive the scholarship. The awards, now $250 each, are presented at the annual Beste Buffet held at the Silver Bay Association during the February Winter Weekend.
Many thanks go to local volunteers who work at and support Winter Weekend activities, a variety of raffles, the annual buffet dinner and those who have made donations over the years.
